Signs of childhood psychological disorders

It’s normal for children and teenagers to sometimes have low moods, poor motivation, and trouble sleeping. These things aren’t always signs of childhood psychological disorders but if they carry on for more than a few weeks, it’s important to talk with your child. Symptoms of childhood psychological disorders affecting Child & Adolescent psychological health may include:

  • Feeling sad much of the time
  • drop in school grades and performance
  • worries or fears that persist for long time or are extreme
  • problems fitting in at school or getting along with other children
  • aggressive or consistently disobedient behaviour, or repeated temper tantrums
  • sleep problems, including nightmares, trouble sleeping. 

For young people 12 years and older, watch out for:

  • Your child seeming down and feeling hopeless.
  • being tearful or lacking motivation
  • having trouble coping with everyday activities, feeling exhausted most of the time
  • showing sudden changes in behaviour, for no obvious reason
  • having trouble eating or sleeping
  • drop in school performance, or refusing to go to school
  • avoiding friends or social contact
  • reporting physical pain – for example, headache, stomach ache or backache for which their doctor has not been able to determine a cause
  • being aggressive or antisocial 
  • being very worried about their weight or physical appearance, losing weight or failing to gain weight as they grow.

For young people 12 years and older, watch out for:
